Post Baby Weight: Soul Cycle

soul2

So, I generally don’t write about things unless they are really worth writing about.

I hate to admit it, but I have fallen for the current spinning craze called Soul Cycle. I used to spin pretty obsessively back in high school (and I am proud to say it was loooong before it was “cool” to spin). I loved it and I have fallen in love all over again.

soul3

Soul Cycle is a FULL body workout with high intensity music and coaching by your instructor. It’s dark in the room and the idea is that you ride as a pack, as a family so to speak. So, you try to match your stride to the person next to you. It’s hard and its sweaty but most importantly, it is fun and you leave on a high. I don’t know any other exercise that you can do in 45 minutes that will leave you feeling as good as Soul Cycle does. It truly is good for your soul.

soul1

It’s pretty expensive-$38/ride, which doesn’t include shoe rental (you need to clip into the bike) or water BUT they do have free hair elastics, lockers, towels & sticks of orbit gum at the front desk. These are all little things that I happen to notice and appreciate!

A location just opened in my neighborhood making it easier for me to get to and even has mecontemplating cancelling my gym membership!

If you don’t have a Soul Cycle near you, come visit me in NYC and I will treat you to your first class!

8 Months

I know I say this almost every monthly post that I write but I just cannot believe Ellery is 8 months old. I just don’t understand how time can go back so fast!? It was just a year ago that Mach and I were researching our birth plans and getting Elle-Belle’s nursery set up. Now, she is here and learning and growing at a faster pace then I can keep up with.

IMG_6207

Ellery is LOVING:

Solids! It took a little while but I think we’ve finally found a feeding schedule that works for all of us and some new foods that she is loving. Lately we are enjoying goat milk yogurt with pureed berries and some oats at breakfast. We’ve been trying mashed egg yoke (from free roaming, organic, locally sourced eggs), avocado banana smash, sweet potatoes with apple and we are working our way onto beans, pastas and some more whole grains to incorporate with all our veggies.

Books! Ellery loves to sit and read a book. She’s very much interested in touching the touch and feel books and knows exactly where to put her fingers to feel the texture. It’s such an amazing change from when we first started reading.

Music and Dancing: She is still loving music and dancing to raffi and other fun songs. She just bops along on her bum while the music plays.

Moving everywhere! Ellery is on the move. She isn’tofficiallycrawling yet but she is close. She is up on her hands and knees rocking back and forth and trying to move forward. I am so excited for her to figure it out but selfishly okay with her not being quite so mobile yet. She is my little babe and I’m not sure I am ready for her to start crawling and then (omg!) walking!

She has started pulling herself up in the crib. We just lowered it last night because we didn’t want to worry about any accidents even though she can’t quite pull herself up and stay up. It could happen and I want to be ready for it.

We came back from a week at the Cape. I needed some help during the day with our nugget so that I could get some work done and Grammie came to our rescue. Mach joined us for the weekend and we finally got a day at the beach. This was Elle’s first trip to “our beach” and she had a blast. She was a little confused about the sand and I don’t think she was overly excited about the temperature of the water; however she was all smiles and sleptunbelievablywell that night. The saltwater air will getcha every time!

This past month Ellery is NOT loving:

-Long diaper changes (or diaper changes at all because they require her to lay still)

-Hanging in the high chair, even with toys she doesn’t love waiting around for her food!

-Having toys or things taken from her that she is not supposed to have. uh oh.

IMG_6217

She’s a hoot to hang out with…even on our very long drives back to NYC from the Cape.

(we stopped for a poopy diaper explosion and please forgive my face as Mach and I were still recovering from a bout of food poisoning)

I am slightly obsessed with J.Crew’s new baby line-hence the above mini photo shoot 🙂

We had a great week at the Cape, got a lot of work done and look forward to heading back for the 4th. I have no doubt we will need to do some serious baby proofing in our apartment, in CT and at the Cape very shortly!

Happy Father’s Day

This is a belated Father’s Day post because Mach and I were both super sick this past weekend (and still recovering).

I just wanted to take a special moment to recognize my amazing baby daddy, mach. I had such high expectations for what he would be like as a Father since I already knew how amazing a husband he was (and is), but he has honestly exceeded my expectations beyond words.

Ellery, Sophie and I feel so blessed to have you as our husband and Dad. Thanks for working so hard every day and for loving us all as much as you do. We love you! Happy First Father’s Day!

I didn’t want to do a whole post without giving a shout out to my amazing Dad, who has been there for my Sister and I always. We love you!

Elle’s First Trip to Fenway Park

We brought Ellery to her first baseball game this past weekend at Fenway Park. Grampy had tickets to a day game that had gotten postponed from the day before. It was perfect because we were Cape bound anyways, so we stopped in Boston for a quick game. It was HOT but we kept Elle cool with her sun hat and sunscreen and a few quick breaks in the shade every once in a while. She was a hit with all the people around us. I don’t think they see too many 7.5 month olds at baseball games that often 🙂

Homemade Almond Milk 101

I am almost embarrassed to say that I have never made almond milk myself. Especially now that I have done it (for three weeks in a row!) and realize how stinking easy it is!

I have been drinking almond milk for several years now-not because I am vegan or don’t consume dairy products, but because I like to be choosy about what dairy products I consume and if I can substitute something even more healthy (and delicious) into my daily life, then why not!? Plus, I can’t even imagine my iced coffees tasting half as amazing as they do with almond milk.

So, here is a quick recipe and break down to make your own almond milk at home. Please don’t wait as long as I did-it’s too good to miss out.

Step 1.

Put about a cup worth of almonds into a container with enough space to allow for water to be added.

almond milk 2

Step 2.

I chose to pour boiling, filtered water over the almonds since I didn’t want to wait a full 24 hours to let them soak. If you have the time then go ahead and let them soak overnight.

almond milk 5

Step 3.

Drain the water from the almonds and put the soaked almonds in your blender. I use a Vita-Mix blender but any strong blender or food processor will work.

almond milk 3

Step. 4.

The first time I made the milk I used cheese cloth as pictured here, but there are also nut milk bags that are a bit easier and allow for reuse. You pour the almond milk and pulp into the bag or cloth and let it drain into a jar or bowl. I used a large mason jar, which I was then able to seal and refrigerate the milk in. Make sure you squeeze out as much milk as possible. You will be left with a lot of almond pulp. I am still trying to find a great recipe to use it in and when I do I will post a recipe for that as well!

Step 5: Close up your container andrefrigerate.

almond milk 1

You should be left with a glorious creamy, white milk in your jar.

almond milk 6

Last but not least, enjoy your almond milk as your prefer-in your coffee, cereal, or just on its own!

almond milk 7

Recipe (this will yield about 3.5 cups):

  • 1 cup raw almonds, soaked in water
  • 3.5 cups filtered water

I didn’t add anything extra to mine and found it to be perfect but if you choose, you can add a vanilla bean, a pinch of sea salt or even some cinnamon!

Exercise Post-Baby

IMG_5599

(above picture taken at Karma Kids Yoga)

I don’t think I read one book, blog, etc… when I was pregnant that actually spelled out the words clearly and simply, YOU WILL NOT BE ABLE TO GET TO THE GYM AS MANY TIMES AS YOU USED TO PRE-BABY. Or, you will not be able to go to the gym AT ALL! So, when I was cleared to start working out again after I gave birth to Elle-Belle, it suddenly hit me, how and when is this working out supposed to happen? I was still figuring out the whole breastfeeding + supplementing with a bottle thing, which meant I needed to be available whenever she wanted to eat and to top that I was beyond exhausted. Not only did I not know how to find the time to workout (between Mach being at work and school) and then Elle needing me, but I was so tired that any free minutes I had I just wanted to relax, sleep or simply breathe.

I belong to a ridiculously nice gym in the West Village, called Equinox. There actually aren’t too many big gyms in my neighborhood in my defense and when I worked at Conde Nast we had an awesome discount so the membership all made sense. I mean, I have celebrity sightings every time I’m there. Last time I was there Cameron Diaz was working out right in front of me! That alone justifies the price to me 🙂

But in all seriousness, working out needs to be happening a lot more often than a few times a month to shed this baby weight!

I’ve always counted on working out to counteract the fact that I love great food. I love to cook, I love to eat and I love the entire experience of dining out. As a family, we love to try new restaurants and I don’t want to miss out on those experiences because of some radical, fad diet to “shed the 30lbs in 30 days”. It took 10 months to grow a baby and with that came a little extra baby weight that I know will come off with time (although I wish it would happen just a litttttle bit faster since bathing suit season is here).

Alas, I have had to find other ways to workout that included the baby. Now that the weather is nice, long walks have been great, but I personally need variety to keep interested. I thought I’d give a list of the places here in NYC that are babe friendly and can get all the new momma’s out there a good sweat!

IMG_4963

Karma Kids Yoga– GREAT Mommy and Baby classes such as yoga and Pilates offered daily! Totally welcoming of babies 6 weeks old through new walkers.

Prenatal Yoga Center-I’ve blogged about the PYC a TON because I love it so much, but I live in the West Village and it’s gotten harder and harder to just bop to the Upper West Side for a class. It ends up taking up my entire morning/afternoon. They have amazing classes for not only Mommy and Me yoga but for Prenatal, Postnatal, etc…

Baby Body Bootcamp-Now that the weather is nice, the outdoor activities can begin! I am loving the Mommy boot camp class down in Battery Park. There is another class currently being offered at Christopher Street that is notaffiliatedwith this company but still amazing. Email me if you want more details on this Christopher Street class.

Fit 4 Mom-I haven’t taken any of these classes yet but have heard positive reviews from other new Moms. These are offered in many different cities so I definitely urge you to search for stroller workout classes close to you.

Workout DVDs: I bought two workouts on Apple TV during the winter. I can’t say I was too dedicated to them, but they were definitely a great option during nap time when the weather was crummy and I just needed to do something!

Tracey AndersonIf you can handle looking at her amazing body the entire time, go for it! Just kidding! She’s motivating to watch and if you do her DVD regularly then I am sure you will see results.

Jillian Michaels 30 Minute Workouts-She breaks the workouts down into small sections so that you can do them at different times without missing a beat.

Whatever you choose to do, you are already on the right track if you’re even thinking about getting up and moving. It’s hard being a new mom, so cut yourself some slack and take a moment to realize that your body just did an incredible thing and will take time to get back to where you were pre-pregnancy. I have to tell myself this on a daily basis.

Ellery’s Birth Movie

I am so excited to share this video with everyone.

As I mentioned a few posts ago, Maciej gave me an unbelievable Mother’s Day gift, Ellery’s birth video. Since day 1 of being pregnant, I knew Maciej was taking video, but I didn’t know when or how he was going to put it together. He hasn’t had a spare minute since she was born-he was in the midst of finishing his MBA, designing the website & branding forLovage Baby Blends, as well as learning how to be a great Dad. Needless to say, I didn’t expect any sort of video anytime soon!

Hope you enjoy as much as I did!

New Momma, New Blog

biscuit-logo-circle

For any followers that actually read my blog, (it still boggles my mind that anyone does) thanks for following me here!

It took me awhile to decide on a new blog name and although I am not sure I am in LOVE with the new name, it seems fitting since “Biscuits in the Oven” is one of the few songs we listen to around here lately. If you don’t know it, you should get over to iTunes and download it immediately. It is a song by Raffi, who also happened to be one of my very favorite childhood musicians.

I love to cook and to eat, to travel and most of all, I love my new babe, Elle. This blog is going to be about all those things as well as our adventures in the current city we live, NYC. So, for all those Mommas and Momma’s to be with their little biscuits in the oven, I hope you enjoy reading this blog as much as I enjoy writing it.

Thanks for taking time to read about our lives-pregnancy, having a new babe and learning the ins and outs of being a new Momma in NYC. It’s been a lot of fun sharing so far and I hope it continues for many more “biscuits in the oven!” (just kidding, Mach, no more babies for a bit 🙂

A Look Back (by The Big Labinski)

Throughout the pregnancy, I definitely had my fair share of anxieties about labor and delivery. Hospitals make me queasy in general and there is always this fear in the back of your mind that something may not go as planned and you will be faced with tough decisions. I would always tell myself “they’ve been doing this since the beginning of man-kind (literally) and hundreds of babies are delivered in New York each day,” – but you still can’t help but worry. But I mostly kept my fears to myself. I didn’t want to add any additional stress on Jenn. Besides, she’d be the one pushing out our 10 pound Ellery through her nether regions. Yikes.

The last few weeks of pregnancy are the worst. Each day is so long! You’re nervous, excited, but most of all, you’re just eager to get labor started. Then the day comes – and even though you’ve been waiting for this day for 9 months, it all feels very sudden. The day everything in your life will change as you know it (although you don’t really know it – yet – but everybody’s been telling you this since you got pregnant).

The initial realization that your partner is in labor is NOTHING like the movies. Jenn started having contractions – mild enough that we were able to walk around the neighborhood with Sophie (with some breaks until a contraction passed). Mostly however, we just hung out around the apartment – waiting for things to progress. Which, being the dad, is basically how you spend the rest of your time: waiting.

And in our case, waiting for 5 days to be exact. Looking back, it put it plainly, labor was long. By the third day, it felt like our baby was never coming out. I remember just wishing so bad for our doula to say the words – “ok, time to go to the hospital!” – not only because I was impatient but also because it was hard to see Jenn in so much pain. She was a trooper though and, in retrospect, I am so happy that we waited for as long as we did. The biggest let-down would have been arriving at the hospital, realizing that no progress had been made, and being sent home to labor more. I don’t think I could have done it.

My biggest surprise about the hospital was how quiet and calm the delivery floor was. I was expecting people rushing around, patients on hospital beds, doctors and nurses everywhere, and just more commotion in general. Not true (again, I’ve seen too many movies). The most climactic moment of labor is the first triage check-in. Let me tell you, it is intense. I remember the room was so eerily quiet during the check that I could hear my heart pounding through my chest. But Jenn had done it! She was 5 centimeters dilated and 100% effaced. Pheww…we had passed the bouncer with the velvet rope and we were in!

The problem is, 5 centimeters is only half way there. So the waiting starts again. But now with a purpose. The other surprising thing to me was how nice the nursing staff was. You hear too often that a nurse with a bad attitude ruined someone’s experience. I feel like that’s more the anomaly than the norm. The nurses at Cornell made us feel welcomed and were always around to answer my questions – no matter how dumb they were. They respected our wishes to attempt a completely natural delivery and never once tried to push the epidural. The staff at Cornell was simply outstanding.

The laboring process in the hospital is much like it was at home. Jenn was in the shower a few times, on the work-out ball, walking around – basically anything to help get her mind off the pain. The three things I remember about the hospital was that 1) it was freezing cold (bring warm clothing), 2) the food absolutely sucks (even though you don’t have much of an appetite, when you do get hungry there are NO options) and 3), it is just SO MUCH physical work. I was constantly on my feet, trying to help Jenn get more comfortable – whether it’s talking to her, rubbing her back, giving massages, helping her walk, etc. For someone who’s used to sleeping 8+ hours per night, 5 days of labor is a slight adjustment. My only reprieve was from our doula, who worked constantly (harder than I did) and was the best investment I’ve ever made. I would 100% recommend a doula to any first time couples.

Eventually, Jenn’s progress hit a wall and the talk of an epidural came up. It was nice to have a medical perspective from our OB and a more holistic perspective from our doula. Surprisingly, this important decision that I was dreading for months before came rather easily. It just felt like the right thing to do at that time – Jenn had pushed her body to the limits – and this was the next logical step to get her over the hump. So much focus is placed on the epidural procedure in pregnancy literature but honestly no one should worry about it – because relative to what you’ve gone through thus far, it’s nothing. It was all done in 15 minutes and Jenn was able to get some sleep within the hour.

While the first triage check is the most intense, that doesn’t mean the subsequent progress checks are easy. When Jenn was checked before the epidural and had not made much progress – my heart sank, I became discouraged, and almost depressed. But when the doc did her last check and confirmed Jenn was ready to push – I became elated as I ran around the room high-fiving Terry and the nursing staff. It honestly felt like we won the lotto.

In relation to labor – delivery seemed almost too fast. Jenn pushed for a mere 30 minutes and Ellery was out! At one point, Jenn started to doubt herself if she could do it – which scared the daylights out of me – but our doc completely disregarded her and just kept yelling PUSH! (she must get the self-doubt thing all the time). Once I saw that little cone-head come out, I was completely over-joyed. I’m not much of a crier (I really can’t remember the last time I cried) and let me tell you, there tears were streaming down my face! Our little nugget had arrived – after a very, very, long journey – but safe and sound nonetheless. My heart melted the moment I saw her and I was instantly in love.

Lessons learned? Well, for one, you can prepare as much as possible (which I completely recommend) but remember to always remain open. Future dads – get ready to work – because even if you’re wife’s in labor for only a day, you’re not sitting back with your feet up reading GQ while she’s pushing that baby out. It’s hard work. And remember to take it all in – kind of a crazy experience that you’ll probably only witness 1 or 2 times in your life. Enjoy it – because the next few weeks will be even harder!
